It’s official. Seemingly all of Melbourne is on the hunt for rooftop Christmas party venues in the lead-up to the end of year celebration season. Is it the freezing cold that makes us long for cocktails under the stars, and weather warm enough to actually do it? Or is it just the fact that Melbourne is filled with amazing rooftop function spaces? It’s likely a little of both, but who cares about the reason.
Here are nine of our favourite rooftop spaces, all primed and ready for end of year functions:
We’ll kick this off with a hidden gem – which is saying a lot, in a city that has ‘hidden secrets!’ and ‘laneways!’ as its calling card. Perched atop the most unlikely of locations – a Rydges property in Carlton – is The Pool Deck, a venue that truly leaves the button-down hotel branding downstairs. With festoon lighting above, greenery all around and that titular pool deck, it’s one of our top picks for the end of year season.
Climb the stairs at European Bier Cafe all the way up, to AER Bar. This Little Collins favourite’s had a recent facelift, to make it even more attractive to the many office workers that call it their local. It’s also a prime spot for end of year office celebrations, with a retractable roof, a vast selection of beer (or bier), and flexible function options – go casual with a section to yourself, or hire the entire venue.
Palmz at the Carlton has to be one of Melbourne’s original rooftop bars, and it’s stood the test of time. The jungle decor, the party starting atmosphere, the actual palm trees – the recipe for an excellent time. Plus, the Hasti Bala bar is downstairs. If your team is a huge one, and if the boss is ready to hire two spectacular spaces, we recommend getting it done.
Bomba Rooftop is an intimate rooftop space set in the middle of the city. Having undergone a recent facelift, the space is a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor. You’ll find yourself surrounded by lights and buildings and excitement. The food and drinks on offer are top notch, and the vibe’s the right amount of stylish. It’s little wonder this is such an enduring favourite.
We get it. Not all Christmas parties or end of year celebrations are elegant to dos, soirées with six courses. If you’re anything like the Venuemob team, all you want by the end of December is a friendly and well-stocked bar, a casual vibe, and enough space to let off some steam and boogie. That’s exactly what Hawthorn’s Nevermind has in store. Along with a charming rooftop space.
There’s nothing quite like beating the heat by ascending to the top of building and chilling poolside, cocktail in hand. The rooftop at Adelphi Hotel has recently undergone a major upgrade. The lap pool, hanging above Flinders Lane is still there. But in addition, a new layout and furniture has been added, creating one of Melbourne’s most exclusive event spaces.
If you’ve been a successful and well loved cocktail bar for a bunch of years, what’s the next move? For Loop, it was to add a rooftop: Loop Roof. The space is intimate, filled with greenery, and is a top choice for non-exclusive (or exclusive) events. When it comes to rooftop Christmas party venues, this one’s for the smaller groups. Grab a cocktail, and jostle for a spot near the water sprinklers.
Available only for private events, The Stolen Gem boasts one of Melbourne’s best rooftop views. High above Bourke Street, this venue offers party planners an exclusive, flowing layout. And that view? That is a view that’s going to have your guests whipping out their phones and flooding their feeds with posts and tags.
The Emerson: club downstairs, rooftop bar and lounge upstairs. This is a stylish space that comes into its own in the summer months (for obvious reasons). It’s quintessentially south side, with clean lines, light tones and plenty of good things happening on the menu. Recommended for larger groups that need to impress.
