The Metropolitan Hotel’s been a bit of a landmark within its particular city “neighbourhood” for over 150 years. Luckily, it’s had a few stylish refurbishments and face-lifts over the course of its long life. In more recent memory, it’s been keeping the be-suited business and legal types of the CBD fed and watered, all day and into the night.

During the day, the Metropolitan makes a reliable and stylish location for business lunches, breakfasts, and a brief break from the grind. As the working day ends, the vibe of the Metropolitan shifts a little, to one of laid-back fun and beers enjoyed at the end of a long day. The Metropolitan’s menu reads of upmarket pub-grub, with the parma being a particular favourite.

The Metropolitan boasts two private function rooms, which can be joined together to make one larger space. Level one fits up to 130 guests, and lends itself to corporate functions, weddings, and larger events, as well as more intimate ones. The ground level function space is an open-plan area, offering a stage for entertainers, and a private bar with specialty brews flowing from hand-carved statues.

The Metropolitan Hotel is found in the middle of the “legal precinct” of Melbourne’s CBD. Namely, it’s on William Street, between Lonsdale and La Trobe Streets. That’s just near Flagstaff station, as well as Flagstaff Gardens. There are plenty of trams that run up and down La Trobe Street.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the latest we can have our event?

We are very lucky as we have a 24 hour license however our standard events are 5 hours and there are room hire fees and surcharges for events that run after 1.00am. Please enquire for more information.

Can underage guests attend my party?

Underage guests are welcome to attend all our events as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. They will not be served alcohol.

How do I book?

To make a booking please contact us and we will advise you of availability of the date. All functions require a deposit to be paid to formally confirm a booking, the amount varies depending on the style of event and for charities and social clubs we have special arrangements.

Can we decorate the room?

We do allow our guests to bring in their own decorations, some restrictions apply in order to protect the venue and there are cleaning surcharges for glitter and confeti

Is there parking available?

Parking is available at the former Royal Mint building (diagonally opposite the venue) for more than 150 vehicles or on-street parking (metered until 7.30pm weekdays).

Do I need a security guard?

In accordance with our liquor license and security regulations, a security fee of $40 per hour per guard applies to all functions with amplified music, which essentially is music played for a dance-level rather than background music. This applies to the entire function duration (i.e. 5 hours of security for a 5 hour function regardless if the music is only being played on an amplified level later in the evening). Security/Doorman will initially be stationed at the main entrance primarily greeting your guests and then discreetly patrolling the venue throughout the evening. Management reserves the right to remove any objectionable person from the premises.

We absolutely loved having our engagement party at the Metropolitan. The room layout is just made for social occasions being open and the bar is a the centre of the fun, not tucked away from the hub of activity like some venues. The team were a pleasure to deal and made the organisation of the night so easy for us, I am usually a stresser but they gave me absolutely no need to stress. The staff on the night were a pleasure as well, interacting with us and our guests, it was a charming quality that they cared so much and that if felt more than a job to them. We really loved the freedom of the food and drink options and the food was delicious. On the night, it was served at regular intervals and we never felt like we were looking for, the timing was perfect all night. We had the perfect night at the Metropolitan, our guests had fun, we enjoyed ourselves immensely and I feel blessed to come away so happy from our celebration. The whole night was just a perfect representation of us in a night.

A 5+ star venue: great location, great staff, great food. We held our daughter’s 21st birthday party at The Metropolitan and cannot thank the staff enough for their attention and service, especially Jessica who assisted us all along the way. The Level 1 function room was perfect, it was private, the finger food we chose was delicious, the service was impeccable. The staff on the night, ably led by Jasmine, were professional, polite, friendly and went out of their way to ensure our guests were looked after. This was one of the only venues that allowed us to come in earlier in the day to put up decorations, hire a Pool Table from an external company and they even allowed us to provide some nibbles for when guests arrived. They were extremely flexible and helpful in this area. The venue location is very handy to public transport and parking facilities. We have received many positive comments from our guests and they have all said the same thing – ‘great venue choice’. We would not hesitate in recommending The Metropolitan Hotel to anyone seeking a first class venue in Melbourne for a special celebration and would definitely utilise this venue again in the future.
